Essentials for New Dog Owners Part 2

3. Enrichment Toys.
An entertained dog is a well-behaved dog. If you don’t want your dog digging holes in the yard or chewing up your remote, it’s time to buy some enrichment toys. These toys are designed to stimulate your dog’s mind. Many dog enrichment toys are food-oriented, such as some by Kong. These toys require your dog to “solve” the toy in order to receive the treats you have stored inside. These toys are also a great way to treat your dog without too much worry about weight gain. Since they require some effort, the dog generally will exercise off the extra calories from the treat. However, if you are searching for toys that aren’t food-oriented, fear not. Many companies make puzzle toys your dog will love, such as the Kyjen Hide-A-Squirrel Plush Toy. This toy features plush squirrels inside a plush log, providing hours of fun for your dog. Although some enrichment toys can get expensive, they can usually be found on eBay for a great price. Check out my collection, “New Dog Essentials,” for more toy ideas.

4. Exercise Toys.
Although enrichment toys are great, it’s also important to buy toys that encourage your dog to exercise. Most dogs have a lot of energy, and they can become frustrated if they don’t get to use it. A cheap and easy exercise toy for dogs is a tennis ball. You can throw the tennis ball and they can fetch it until either you or the dog get tired of it.

5. Pet Bed
Some people let their dog sleep on their bed. Some people don’t. Either way, your dog might enjoy a bed of its own. Check eBay for the best prices on pet beds, because they can get expensive quickly. Be sure to buy a bed that is large enough for your dog to recline comfortably! Check out different shapes and sizes, along with different fabrics, to find a bed that is the best fit for your pet.
