So, you’ve finally decided to get a new dog! Maybe it’s your first, or maybe you’re adding to your pack. Either way, you know that this is a big decision, and it’s time to act like it. Sure, you’ve already got your dog food, your dog treats, and your food and water bowls. But there’s a lot more that goes into raising a happy, well-behaved dog! I own a very cranky dachshund mix from a local shelter, and I also foster dogs. Every time I bring a new dog into the household, I find myself wishing that I had written a list of things I needed to buy before I got the new dog home. Luckily for you, this guide is that list, and if you follow it, you will find your adoption or dog-buying experience going very smoothly.
1. Collar and Leash
Every dog needs a collar. A dog collar is not only stylish, it’s a way to attach some form of identification to your dog. The dog collar will hold your dog’s tag, its rabies tag, and possibly attach to the dog’s leash as well. It’s important to know the right size of dog collar before you buy. A collar that is too loose will allow your dog to slip out, and a collar that is too tight will rub and choke the dog.
2. Flea Medication
Your dog is probably going to go outside at some point, whether it is frolicking in your backyard, hiking with you, or simply going on a walk down the block. While your dog is outside, it is being exposed to all kinds of bugs, like fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. Not only can these nasty bugs make your dog uncomfortable, it can expose your dog to illnesses.
