Dog Bed Buying Guide

Measure the Dog
The very first step in buying a dog bed is to know exactly how much room a dog takes up when sleeping. Many people think they can estimate this without measuring, but it is common for some dogs to stretch out as much as possible when sleeping and therefore take up more room than one would expect.

Sleeping Positions
Not all dogs sleep in the same position. Some dogs will curl themselves up, and prefer to feel safe and secure before they can get some rest. Other dogs extend their legs out and take up as much room as possible.

Types of Dog Bed
Dog beds are available in all types of styles, from basic models to elaborate pieces of furniture. Dog owners can make an educated decision on what type of bed to purchase based on their dog's size, age, and particular habits. Ultimately, however, it is the dog that decides what type of bed is acceptable, and some dogs are pickier than others.

Standard Dog Bed
The most basic dog beds simply look like oversized pillows. They come in sizes for all breeds of dog, from tiny to extra large. These basic beds have no raised edges and are just a big cushion for a dog to plop down on. They work well for most dogs, whether they curl up or stretch out.

Nest Beds
Nest dog beds feature raised edges or walls for a dog to snuggle up against. For a dog that prefers to feel secure or enclosed when sleeping, these beds are the perfect option.

Orthopedic Beds
Just as humans sometimes purchase special mattresses to help with their achy joints, there are special beds for older dogs with the same problem.

Dog Couches
Some dogs love to sleep on furniture, much to the dismay of their owners. In this case, a dog couch may help to remedy the problem. These beds look like miniature versions of couches, specially sized for dogs to sleep on.
